Remodel plumbing

When a remodel changes the plumbing

Most remodels touch the plumbing, even when the room keeps its layout. These are the jobs we see:

  • An old two- or three-handle shower valve swapped for a single-handle one.
  • A shower valve that drips, sticks, or swings hot and cold.
  • A sink or faucet moved for a new vanity, or a second sink added.
  • A new tub, or a tub swapped for a walk-in shower, with the drain and valve changed to suit.
  • A toilet moved, or a new one installed.
  • A kitchen sink, faucet, or garbage disposal moved or replaced.

Trim is the handle and plate you see. If the valve behind it is sound and fits your new trim, we tell you, and it stays where it is.

Questions

Straight answers about remodel plumbing

The questions people ask before a remodel.

How much does a shower valve replacement cost?

The cost of a shower valve replacement comes down to three things: whether the valve can be reached from the back of the wall or only through the tile, the valve and trim you choose, and the condition of the pipes it connects to. That is why we look first. Estimates are free across Lane County and a reasonable drive beyond, and you get a clear estimate before work starts.

Can you replace a shower valve without removing tile?

A shower valve can often be replaced without removing tile when the wall behind the shower can be opened from a closet or the next room. When it cannot, the valve comes out through the front. How much tile that touches depends on the valve and the new trim, and a larger cover plate can sometimes hide the opening. Patching the wall or the tile afterward is for your drywaller or tile setter, and which way your job goes is part of the estimate.

Do I need a new shower valve to change the trim?

You usually need a new shower valve to change the trim when you switch brands, because trim is made to fit a matching valve from the same maker. With the same brand and valve series, new trim can often go on the valve you have, as long as the valve is in good shape. We check what is in the wall first.

What is a pressure-balance shower valve?

A pressure-balance shower valve keeps the water temperature steady when someone flushes a toilet or runs a tap elsewhere in the house. The shower does not suddenly turn hot or cold. A thermostatic valve goes a step further and holds the temperature you set. New shower valves are pressure-balance or thermostatic, and both guard against scalding. When a shower swings hot and cold, the usual cause is a worn cartridge, the part inside that mixes the water, or an older valve without that protection.

When should I bring a plumber into a bathroom remodel?

Bring a plumber into a bathroom remodel before the layout is final, because moving a drain or a toilet changes the plumbing more than anything else in the room. The plumbing then goes in twice. New lines, the valve, and any new tub go in while the walls are open, and the faucets, toilet, and trim once the tile and cabinets are done. Have the valve and trim picked before rough-in, since the valve has to match the trim and sit at the right depth for the finished tile.

Do you work with remodelers and contractors?

Yes, Beyond Plumbing and Well works with remodelers and general contractors, and with homeowners running their own remodel. We handle the plumbing only; tile, drywall, and cabinets stay with the other trades. To start, send the plans or a few photos of the room through the form.

How soon can you look at my remodel?

We reply the same business day, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, and set a time to look at the room or go over your plans. Tell us when the walls will be open, and you get the timing for the rough-in and the trim with the estimate.
